12 Months of Giving
Home   Archive   Questions?   List of Charities
Hi! I'm Andréa and I'm 16 years old. My mission in life is to help every person I am able to within my lifetime. With that, my plan for 2011 is to give at least $5 to a charity at the end of each month starting in January.

I will try to give what I can during the months, also. Not in money, but with time and love. That includes volunteer work or just committing random acts of kindness when I can.

"Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go." - Mother Teresa

3/11: United Cerebral Palsy Wheels for Humanity

UCP Wheels for Humanity is a non-profit organization located in California. They refurbish donated wheelchairs and fit them to children and adults with disabilities in developing countries. Then they collaborate with international health-care organizations to find those who need the wheelchairs the most and individual fit them to the recipients.

There is an estimated more than 100 million people worldwide that are in need of a wheelchair, but aren’t able to access one. In most developing countries, if you can’t walk by yourself, you must crawl, be carried, or live a life of confinement. UCP Wheels for Humanity has help over 50,000 people in over 60 nations since 1996.

Donation: $10

2/11: Sarah’s Circle

Sarah’s Circle is a Chicago based non-profit agency that serves women who are homeless or in need of help. There are thousands of people who are homeless in Chicago, and most don’t get any assistance. Single women comprise around 40% of those people. Sarah’s Circle’s mission is to help these women as best they can. They provide housing assistance, case management, referral services and life necessities to these women. They also encourage women to empower themselves by rebuilding physically and emotionally, helping to “realize their unique potential.”

Donation: $5

I also found some unused toiletries lying around my house earlier this week, and I plan on dropping those off there some time within the next week or so. :)

Here is a short video explaining my belief in the power of the dollar and how it spawned into the creation of Project Unum and Vonate.org.

The $1 Movement

Today, I joined Vonate.org. Project Unum and vonate.org is a non-profit organization that raises money for other charities by giving $1 a month. The word “vonate” is a combination of the words “vote” and “donate.” Being a part of this is a pretty simple process. To be a member it costs $15 annually. Three of those dollars goes towards vonate, the other $12 is for your use (giving $1 each month). Vonate features two to three organizations each month, giving you an opportunity to learn more about the organizations, and you choose which one you would like to give a dollar to. You aren’t limited to choosing only one organization and you also aren’t limited to only donating $1. Project Unum and Vonate.org are fairly new, but nearly $12,000 has been raised thanks to the 300+ members who have joined and I’m excited to see how far this organization goes!

Also they’ve recently moved their blog over to tumblr. Check it out!

1/11: She Dances

She Dances is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing healing, therapy and hope to victims of human trafficking and slavery.

“More than 12 million people are exploited worldwide for forced labor and sexual exploitation.” - United Nations

Human trafficking is a multi-million dollar industry. Over 800,000 girls are trafficked across international borders each year for the purposes of sexual exploitation. 1.2 million children are trafficked throughout the world each year. She Dances works towards providing a safe haven in Honduras for some of those victims.

Ending human trafficking and slavery is something I’ve been extremely passionate about for the last few years. Not one person on this Earth deserves to go through the pain and suffering some of these people go through.

“Every girl deserves to dream. Every girl deserves hope. Every girl deserves to love and to be loved. Every girl deserves to dance. When she dances she is alive… when she dances she is free. She’s free to live, to laugh, to love. She’s free in her heart… she’s free in her spirit. Hope moves within her… beauty finds her. She Dances.”

Donation: $5
